Precision Peripherals Ltd was founded in 1982 by Colin and Margaret Richards. Colin had many years in the computer service industry before spending 5 years with Dataproducts, then the world’s largest independent manufacturer of printers, which were the standard printing device for the majority of the minicomputer manufacturers. Precision Peripherals was then formed to sell and service refurbished Dataproducts band and drum printers in a converted barn in a small village in Berkshire. Originally the only field engineer was Colin who used to regularly travel throughout the UK fixing printers. The service side grew until there were a number of engineers around the country.
It was in the late 1980s that PPL began to offer maintenance contracts on the then new laser printers which were just then becoming popular. As the demand for this service increased, more engineers were recruited, and the business expanded again.
In the early 1990s a new sales manager, Peter Irons, took the business in another direction by forming strategic partnerships with barcode thermal printer resellers. This meant that PPL had to learn and adapt to a radically new different printing technology; barcode thermal printing. This paid off as today PPL has strong links with many of the UK’s major barcode printer manufacturers including Zebra, Intermec, Datamax, Sato, Citizen, Printek and Printronix and many others.
During the mid 1990s it became apparent that the premises in Yattendon could no longer hold the ever growing number of spare parts that were needed to support the printers that it had on contract, as well as the increase in workshop repairs. In 1996 a decision was made to move the workshop and logistics facility to Swansea. In 2007 Swansea also became the headquarters for the call centre operation.
In 1998 Precision Peripherals Ltd achieved ISO 9000 quality accreditation which is an accreditation that very few printer repair companies hold.
The last major technological adaptation was initiated by our Operations Director, Hans Guelbert, when he successfully achieved ‘Major Account Service Provider’ (MASP) accreditation with Xerox. This then enabled PPL to repair and maintain the range of Xerox desktop printers, including solid ink and laser printers. This proved to be a very successful diversification for PPL and led to us supporting chains of well know high street estate agents and specialist graphic design companies.
Today Precision Peripherals Ltd employs 28 printer engineers who are strategically based throughout the UK and Ireland. They are supported by a state of the art service management system (R2) and backed up by an efficient logistic facility. We repair printers for many different clients including manufacturers, resellers, major blue chip organizations, as well as small one-man band operations. Although the printer repair industry has changed dramatically from when the company was founded in 1982 we have successfully adapted to the changing printing technology, but have always kept the founding philosophy which is to provide our customers with a quality service. |
